The Rekohu Experience by Merrin Harvey

Hi my name is Merrin Harvey, and I am a very proud descedant of the fascinating Moriori being  the original inhabitants of  Aoteoroa forced to migrate to the Pacific Island of the Mist-(Rekohu) now known as the Chatham Islands. Situated around 600 nautical miles East of Christchurch NZ.  With provailing Westerly's offering brave wheather patterns which will test every soul should you decide to brave the elements.  With its baron surroundings, and tree branches that have an Easterly lean that looks like they were brushed with a comb mimicking the Fonzies famous hair do on the show

Happy Days.  The Islands first glance does not offer any welcoming parties you may have been hoping for during your hour and a half flight in from Christchurch but with in moments of landing your heart will go from where is the nearest Macca's to where are we going to get some Kaimoana from today Uncle.  MMMM......There will be more historical talks and discoveries through out for us to discover.  For the Peace Keeping Moriori migrating to a distant but industrious island catering for our seafood loving taste buds.  Remaining isolated from all incoming diseases the Eruopean Settlers brang to Aoteoroa such as influenza and the common cold may have been our greatest down fall.  Not allowing us to gain natural anti bodies needed to survive such epidemics.  Personal experiences of such illnesses today still plays havoc on our people.  Thus leaves very sad but true social, economical and health issues bringing an end to our full blooded people.

Being both of Maori and  Moriori descendant we live quietly among the polynesian back drop and happily pass as just being Maori mainly to avoid lengthly explanations and possibly a debatable history lesson.   A recent conversation with a fellow Maori at a local park here in Brisbane Qld, who started  brassing off to me about how his ancestors were the ones who canabalised the Moriori and forced them to a migrate was very ecstatic and quite animated about his tales and although my blood was boiling my response was much the same as my ancestors responding with with "Good one bro, you must be so proud of your ancesetors legacy good on you.."
